Twenty years ago, Independence Day was one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, exceeding most expectations and becoming one of the tent-pole movies of that decade.
In 2016, some of the surviving cast is back, as the hostile aliens return bigger and badder to Earth. However this is not the 2016 we know, but rather an alternate-history/timeline of 2016, in which the people of this planet are united as one against this enemy, utilising and adapting the alien technology they have reverse-engineered.
It’s on this premise that may divide the audience, especially for those who are fans of the original film. It certainly moves the franchise way beyond a “disaster” movie, and strongly towards “sci-fi”. For me, the strong science-fiction element works and made this movie quite enjoyable.
Jeff Goldblum returns, however it is Liam Hemsworth that is the central character in a movie that many times tries to replicate everything that was successful with the first film, including some plot-points.
Special mention to Bill Pullman, an actor I greatly admire, whos’ contribution to this franchise is legendary; a man of action plus stunning inspirational spontaneous speeches. He was, is and shall ever be my President.
This movie surprises me. It had good pacing of action scenes, and though a more serious examination of the story would surely uncover many plot-holes, I felt the script overall was intelligently constructed and leaves the door wide open for the franchise to continue.
score: 7 out of 10.
