From comic book to animation to live-action films to video games I’ve followed the thirty year journey of this franchise in a mostly passive way. Sure, I’ve enjoyed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in all their various forms, but I would never consider myself a hardcore fan. So, with this in mind, I was more than willing to approach this reboot with a complete unbiased open-mind.
Storywise, nothing really new is experienced in this re-telling of the Turtles origin and indeed the movie is in danger of simply only being able to follow predictable plot points. In fact, despite the modern visuals of the film, some of it’s ideas and situations just come across as dated … like a relic of the 1980s and 1990s.
This is also very much April O’Neil’s origin story and Megan Fox does a great job at guiding the viewer through her journey. She is very good in this movie, bringing an equal amount of fun, quirkiness and intelligence that the role deserves. Will Arnett is comic relief in a film that has many light-hearted and funny moments.
For me, the highlight of the movie is the frenetic fast pace of the action scenes, as the Turtles strike at … well … Ninja speed and precision. I don’t think this reboot could have been done any much better and totally recommend it for those prepared to have some fun.
