Video Game Review – SYNDICATE (ps3)

SYNDICATE was refused classification in Australia, due to excessive violence blah blah, however my recent trip to New Zealand afforded me the opportunity to play this game [wink wink].

With it’s roots in a couple 1990s PC games with the same title, back when Cyberpunk was emerging as a genre, this new Syndicate of 2012 is a first-person shooter with some strategy.

Viusally, the game is quite good, it certainly has the future noir vibe and visual appearance that we recently saw in games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The voice-acting in the game is highlighted by great performances from Brian Cox and Rosario Dawson.

Beginning the game on hard difficulty, I soon after had to drop is back to normal. Even completing the game at normal difficulty was just a tough experience, especially as the boss fights often required specific tricks, weapon strategy and/or patience to execute. Nonetheless, as a shooter its a good fun and thinking about how you upgrade and use your bio-chip powers adds a unique playability.

Sadly, the game has several flaws. Graphically it’s often sub-par, occasionally buggy, and the AI of the enemy is often terrible. Overall, Syndicate is perhaps guilty of being quickly forgettable. Which is a shame, as I think the world that has been built can be quite interesting and worth further exploration.

Thankfully, the online co-op is excellent and would be the place to settle down for future playing. However, how many people will be playing this game online six months from now? If you are Australian, the answer might be zero.

score: 7 out of 10.
