There is nothing subtle about Bayonetta, either the character or the actual game. It’s upfront with its sexuality, violence and being over-the-top.
However, beneath the superficial is an excellent fighting game, with a system of moves that can be as simple or complex as the player requires.
Storywise, it’s very unique and most unusual, and sometimes confusing, but enjoyment of the game is not dependent upon caring too much about Bayonetta’s motives or surreal history.
The only real detraction from the game is the over-use in swearing during the MANY cut-scenes. Though, some of this is for amusement and comedic effect, and mostly feels unnecessary.
Overall, this game is a lot of fun, best not to be taken too seriously and despite it relying on some of the formula of the games that have come before it, it still manages to offer something truly different in gaming.
score: 8 out of 10.
