THE THING “Freakshow” collects the 4 issue 2002 mini-series written by Geoff Johns plus The Thing/She-Hulk “The Long Night” one-shot written by Todd Dezago.
I found Geoff Johns writing The Thing to be a bit of an oddity, given that his career has been noted with serious interpretations of more prominent superhero comic book characters, and a near-total allegiance to DC Comics.
Indeed, initially the story appears to be a serious examination of The Thing’s eternal struggle to find acceptance with his appearance, in a world that views him to be a freak! Seeking a break from the “big city”, Ben Grimm travels on the next train out of town, and lands in what seems to be a normal little small rural town.
However, things are not as they seem, and before long, The Thing is in-between a localized Kree-Skrull war, trying to make sure neither side gains victory! The one-shot special with the She-Hulk is a more light-hearted tale, as both superheroes find themselves stuck in the underground subway system, after an explosion derails their train. A lot of action, but a bit tiresome and less interesting.
The Thing is a fun character, but is too often played just for laughs. That’s a shame, as there would be more learned from taking such a tragic character more seriously.
