Posted by TaCk on December 31, 2008

This first trade paperback of Vertigo’s comic series NORTHLANDERS, collects the 8 part epic “Sven The Returned”.

Circa A.D. 980, an accomplished Viking named Sven returns to his family estates in Orkney, with the intention to claim his inheritance stolen by his ruthless uncle Gorm.

Considered as either an outsider or a traitor, Sven embarks on a one-man war against his uncle’s army, soon amassing support from unlikely sources.

Collecting 8 issues at under US$10, this trade paperback was always going to get a favorable reaction, unless it was truly unreadable.

Incredibly, “Sven The Returned” just happens to be one of the greatest comic book stories one could possibly ever read!

Wonderfully written by Brian Wood, so poetic, it’s simultaneously beautiful and beautiful.  The words are awesome.  The dialog is brilliant.  The story is an instant classic.

Art by Italian Davide Gianfelice is equally superb; equally brutal and equally beautiful.

The complete comic book experience.

Most definitely one of the best of the comic book experiences of 2008.

JUNGLE GIRL volume 1 hardcover

Posted by TaCk on December 30, 2008

JUNGLE GIRL volume 1 hardcover

JUNGLE GIRL volume 1 hardcover

JUNGLE GIRL volume 1 hardcover collects issues 0 to 5 of this first series, published by Dynamite Entertainment.

Co-written by Frank Cho, well known for his voluptuous images of comic strip Liberty Meadows, with art by Adriano Batista (best known for his work on “bad girl” comics like Bad Kitty and Chastity.

Jungle Girl is a modern day adventure on a remote “lost in time” island.  Our title character is a sexy, skilled and smart female, constantly surprising those she meets, as well as the reader!

The story, assisted by Doug Murray,  flows very quickly; this entire hardcover should easily be read under an hour.  You might take longer, if you want to stare and study the stunning cover art by Cho and interior pages by Batista.

The back of the book concludes with some sketch art.  Nice!

A fun, entertaining read.  Certainly more fulfilling all at once in this slightly over-sized hardcover, than if reading issue to issue.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL volume 1 hardcover

Posted by TaCk on December 29, 2008

The JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL volume 1 hardcover collects the first 7 issues of the series that launched in 1987, in the wake of the LEGENDS event.  The series didn’t actually receive the INTERNATIONAL tag until the 7th issue, having simply been labeled JUSTICE LEAGUE for those opening 6 issues.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL volume 1 hardcover

Mysterious money-maker Maxwell Lord helps sponsor this new super team, probably with the hope to eventually control, exploit and have lots of fun with.

It’s quite ominous that the opening page features THE current Green Lantern – Guy Gardner.  Let’s get something clear.  Guy Gardner is an idiot.  Everyone thinks that.  It’s pretty much a fact, because…   Guy Gardner is an idiot.

At least, that’s the way Keven Maguire draws him, and Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis certainly write him to be an obnoxious moron, too.  The art, script and stories are great in this series, by the way.

Anyway, what can I really tell you about this brilliant book that would make you want to read it?

Batman knocks-out Guy Gardner with one punch!

LEGENDS The Collection

Posted by TaCk on December 28, 2008

On the heels of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTH, and in the wake of WATCHMEN, DC Comics in late 1986 launched their next major event… LEGENDS.

LEGENDS – The Collection tpb (published 1993) collects the 6 part mini-series.  The actual “event” actually had 22 tie-in issues, which mostly showed the dissolution of the current Justice League of America, among other things.

This collection just focuses on the core event issues only.  I must say, I’ve put off reading this tpb for a LONG time.  Also, I had a couple failed attempts to “starting” it.  But I literally forced myself to read this, as this event forms the creation of the New Justice League, and I was eager to begin re-reading that series (as it’s now seeing a series of hardcover collections released).

So, it took almost 40 pages to start “getting into” this book, around about the time of the introduction of the Blue Beetle.  From that moment on, the pages simply fly-by, and ultimately this becomes a very satisfying read.

In aspects somewhat similar to Watchmen, the LEGENDS event, plotted by John Ostrander,  asks of our heroes (and of the readers) “do we really need heroes?”

Also, as a sign of those times, we have a very vocal protagonist of an evangelical-nature, that propels various events and conflict.  Aside from the often colorful fashion, the cameo by president Ronald Reagan firmly places the story in a specific time.

For the most part, the event focus on the B-grade and lesser known heroes of the DC universe, though by the conclusion, the big name heroes and villains make their presence felt.

I love the art by John Byrne.  I’m mostly familiar with his Marvel work, except for the famous Man Of Steel mini-series he wrote and draw at the same time.  His art is unspectacular, but very solid.  But when it comes to drawing women… he LOVES drawing women!  Their are many strong females seen in this collection, and everyone of them looks hot!

Len Wein’s script is strong, funny and easily to follow.  I was surprised by how enjoyable reading this was, especially given that I’d been putting off reading it for such a large amount of time.  Issue 4 would rank as one of the greatest single issues I’ve EVER read.

Anyhoo, by the end of the story, everything gets resolved, and despite the JLA disbanding (as seen in their own series), the resolution of the story sees the formation of a NEW Justice League…   buh wah wah!

SKY DOLL hardcover

Posted by TaCk on December 8, 2008

Sky Doll hardcover

Sky Doll hardcover

At long last, I’ve now finally managed to read the awesome SKY DOLL, art and story by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa.

Evoking memories of all the great Euro Sci-fi I read throughout the 1980s and 1990s inside Heavy Metal magazine, Sky Doll also manages to be rather risqué with its’ visuals, which is something unexpected coming from a Marvel publication (under the co-operation of French publisher Soleil Productions).

However, Marvel has shown some self-censorship, by removing the nipple coloring from the original cover. Though, as far as I can tell, the interior pages are the same as seen in the original European printings.

This hardcover collects all three serialized issues of the comic, which were each double-sized length, making for an approx. 150 page story.

Noa is a Sky Doll, a life-like female android without rights, who exists only to serve the State’s needs and desires. She meets two so-called “missionaries” who aid in her escape from her tyrannical master, but all hell breaks loose as she uncovers clues that she may be much more than just a robotic toy.

Mostly surprising is the religious-political aspect of the story (somewhat echoing the film “The Fifth Element” in parts), but ultimately it’s how the characters re-act to each other which makes this a fantastic reading experience.

All characters are well defined in the saga and the artwork is simply beautiful. One brilliant aspect of each page, is the rounded word balloons, which helps give the comic are softer, less artificial world.

I really love Sky Doll. It fulfills just about everything I would want from this entertainment medium.

Finally, some credit is due for this English translation by C.B. Cebulski, who’s script is always humorous and clever.
