PREVIEWS June 2008 #237

Posted by TaCk on June 7, 2008

Last week I bought PREVIEWS June 2008 #237 (for items shipping August+ 2008).

Having flicked through it, the following upcoming trade paperback/hardcover comic books are of interest to me…

DARK HORSE

Bernie Wrightson’s FRANKENSTEIN hardcover – This should be the MUST HAVE purchase for any comic book fan this year!

SERENITY: BETTER DAYS tpb – Well priced, due to the smallish size of the tpb, I’ll likely get this and upgrade to the inevitable hardcover version later on.

The UMBRELLA ACADEMY: APOCALPYSE SUITE hardcover – An over-sized Limited Edition at a price of US$79.95 this ain’t a simple purchase, but I’m sure it will be snapped up quickly by the hardcore fan that’s not satisfied with just the trade paperback being released later this month.

DC (VERTIGO)

FABLES: COVERS by JAMES JEAN hardcover – At US$39.95, this is probably for hardcover FABLES fans only. Luckily, Fables is my favorite comic book. :)

Y: The LAST MAN Deluxe Edition Book 1 hardcover – Containing the first 10 issues of the series, over-sized at US$29.99, another MUST BUY!

MARVEL

DARK TOWER – The LONG ROAD HOME hardcover – I enjoyed the first hardcover series of Dark Tower, even though it was quite unconventional.

ELEKTRA by Frank Miller Omnibus hardcover – Yup, another essential purchase.

TOMB OF DRACULA Omnibus volume 1 hardcover- This is looking like one very expensive month!

SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE volume 2 hardcover – One of my favorite comic books FINALLY gets its’ second hardcover release.

LOGAN hardcover – The 3 issue mini-series written by Brian K. Vaughan.

X-MEN: LEGACY “DIVIDED HE STANDS” hardcover – X-Men has been pretty good in the past year or so.

The TWELVE volume 1 hardcover – I’ve been looking forward to this J. Michael Straczynski series all year.

CLANDESTINE: BLOOD RELATIVE hardcover – I enjoyed reading the “classic” hardcover, so will definitely give this a try.

INDIE COMICS

(ABSTRACT STUDIOS) ECHO volume 1 tpb – Collecting the first 5 issues of the Terry Moore series.

(ANARCHY STUDIOS/HARRIS COMICS) VAMPIRELLA: CRIMSON CHRONICLES MAXIMUM tpb – Great value at 400+ pages for US$17.95.

(ASYLUM PRESS) The BOMB tpb – It looks like a super fun book based upon that front cover!

(DEVIL’S DUE PUBLISHING) SERPO original graphic novel – Looks interesting.

(IDW) DOCTOR WHO – AGENT PROVACATEUR tpb – Some David Tennant original stuff.

(ONI-PRESS) QUEEN & COUNTRY: DEFINITIVE EDITION volume 3 tpb – Greg Rucka.

(STERLING PUBLISHING) The TRIAL graphic novel – An now for something completely different.

(TOKYOPOP) GOTH graphic novel – A R18+ one-shot manga. Yes please.

(YEN PRESS) SUNDOME volume 3 graphic novel – More teasing humiliation? How can I resist?

TRINITY #1 (2008 June 4)

Posted by TaCk on June 7, 2008

Trinity #1Of all the “events” and big series of 2008, TRINITY is the one I’ve been looking forward to most, mainly because it will provide the rare opportunity to read Wonder Woman on a regular basis!

This new weekly comic series from DC is split with two concurrent stories, that will most likely converge at some point in the future.

The first storyline depicts Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman having a meeting discussing the different but similar themed dream they have all recently experienced. Upon bumping into the Flash and discussions with other superheroes, it becomes apparent to our trinity the dream was not only experienced by them only, but probably focused at them too.

The second storyline features villainous Morgaine Le Fey, who sets out to discover the source of this dream imagery also, while compiling her own evil trinity to match our heroes.

It’s a good start to the overall series, even though the second part was a bit messy and less interesting for me in this opening issue. Let’s see how this progresses over the next few weeks…

7 out of 10.

FX #4 (of 6)

Posted by TaCk on June 7, 2008

Fx #4I’m starting to realize why I keep buying this comic book is because it seems to get released in a “light” buying week for me. But there’s more to it than that, as FX does offer something different than most comic books that are released today = It has a definite 1980s charm about it.

Issue 4 of FX is the best issue yet, with full-on action page after page. Writer Wayne Osborne certainly gets his money’s worth out of John Bryne’s art here.

A special mention to the lettering by John Workman, as it adds a lot to the “vibe” of the book, and it something that can easily be over-looked.

The coloring, in this issue from Ian Sokoliwski, continues to be among the brightest seen in comic books today. None of that moody realism, this is in-your-face thick and flat oranges, blues and greens!

It’s over halfway in the series, so I assume I’ll follow this one through to the end.

7.5 out of 10.
